All You Need To Know About Cypriot Weddings
We understand that for many of our guests this might be the first Cypriot wedding you've been to. Although our wedding is going to be a blend of cultures, we thought we'd give you an idea of what to expect
Preparation of the Bride
In Cypriot tradition, getting ready is more than hair, makeup and nerves , it’s a full on celebration! Before the wedding is filled with music, family, and lots of emotion. The bride is “dressed” by her family and friends, and there’s a special ritual where loved ones tie a red scarf or sash around her waist to symbolise fertility and happiness. You might hear live violin or lute music, see dancing, and experience a few happy tears, it's a lovely, intimate moment full of meaning.

"Na zisete!" – Giving Congratulations
In Cypriot culture, it's common for guests to give "congratulations" in the form of money (you might hear people say “na zisete”, meaning “may you live long!”). Rather than a wedding gift list, this tradition is a way of helping the couple start their new life together.
This will take place after the ceremony – when family and friends come up to provide an envelope to the bride and groom.
Don’t worry if you’ve never done this before – there’ll be plenty of friendly faces around and no pressure at all. It’s all part of the celebration and totally optional!
There Will Be Dancing. Lots of It.
Cypriot weddings are known for their incredible energy – and that means dancing! Expect traditional Greek dances (yes, the kind that goes in a circle!), upbeat modern tunes. Don’t worry if you don’t know the steps, just join in and go with the flow. It's all about having fun together!
Eat, Drink & Be Ready for a Feast
Cypriot weddings are known for their generous food and drink, bring your appetite! From canapés to the main meal (and probably a dessert table that never ends), you won’t go hungry. Dietary options will be available too, just let us know in advance.
